Minced beef, known for its versatility and quick cook time, forms the base of this hearty Italian-inspired dish. When simmered with tomatoes, herbs, and a few vegetables, it transforms into a rich Bolognese sauce that's perfect over al dente spaghetti. Serve it with garlic bread and a green salad for a complete family meal.
For the Bolognese sauce:
1 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 carrot, finely diced
500 g minced beef
1 tbsp tomato purée
400 g can chopped tomatoes
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil (or mixed Italian herbs)
1 beef stock cube (or 1 tsp bouillon paste)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Optional: 1 tsp sugar (to balance acidity)
For the spaghetti:
350 g dried spaghetti
Salt, for pasta water
Sides (optional):
Garlic bread (bake at 180°C/350°F for 10–12 min)
Green salad with olive oil & balsamic vinegar
Sauté the base:
In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and carrot, cook for 5 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for another 1 minute.
Cook the beef:
Add minced beef, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook for 5–7 minutes until browned all over.
Build the sauce:
Stir in tomato purée, chopped tomatoes, oregano, basil, and crumbled stock cube. Add a splash of water if needed. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
Cook spaghetti:
Meanwhile, boil a large pot of salted water. Add spaghetti and cook according to packet instructions (usually 8–10 minutes). Drain and set aside.
Final seasoning:
Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt, pepper, and sugar if needed
Toss the drained spaghetti with the sauce, or serve the sauce on top. Garnish with grated Parmesan and fresh parsley if desired, and then pair with warm garlic bread and a crisp green salad for a complete meal.
